Elderly man drowns at beach in Maricá

A 65-year-old man drowned at a beach in Maricá, Brazil, after showing signs of health issues while swimming.

An unfortunate incident occurred on Monday when Valdir Ramos dos Santos, a 65-year-old man, drowned at Itaipuaçu beach in Maricá, part of the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. Witnesses reported that he entered the water and soon exhibited signs of a health crisis, after which he began to drown. Lifeguards on duty promptly rescued him from the water and initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive him. Despite their efforts, medical personnel brought in by helicopter declared him dead on the scene.

The Civil Defense agency noted the increased risks during this time of year, especially with the Carnival season leading to a surge in beachgoers. From Friday through Monday, a total of 82 rescues were reported across beaches in Maricá, highlighting the dangers posed by rough waters. The agency emphasized that many of the city's beaches were marked with red flags, indicating a high risk of drowning, which serves as a critical warning for swimmers and beach attendees.

This tragedy underscores the importance of water safety and awareness, particularly during popular holiday times when large crowds flock to the beaches. Authorities are urging beachgoers to heed safety warnings, remain vigilant, and prioritize their well-being while enjoying water activities to prevent further incidents during this busy period.
