Carnival schedule changes in Santarém due to rain; check for changes

Severe rain in Santarém has led to the cancellation of carnival events scheduled for the fat Monday of carnival, with some activities rescheduled for the following day.

In Santarém, located in the western part of Pará, Brazil, heavy rainfall that began on Monday, February 16th, has forced significant changes to the local Carnival schedule. The planned festivities for the fat Monday of carnival had to be canceled due to safety concerns raised by the torrential rains. Priscila Castro, Santarém's Secretary of Culture, explained that the severe weather conditions made it impossible to proceed with the programming, ensuring the safety of participants and attendees is paramount during such events.

In response to the cancellation, the local authorities have announced that the carnival activities will be moved to Tuesday, February 17th, with an extension of hours until 2:30 AM. This adjustment allows all carnival blocks and bands to celebrate, albeit on a different day. Castro emphasized the importance of adapting to changing weather conditions and reassured residents that the program would continue as planned for the following day, considering it safe enough to enjoy.

However, not all events will proceed as initially scheduled; notably, the band Fruta Quente will not be able to perform on the rescheduled date. This change highlights the disruptions caused by unexpected severe weather, which can significantly impact local cultural events like Carnival, necessitating quick decision-making by organizers to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the community.
