Yle: A new Ramadan solution at a school in Helsinki
A Helsinki school has introduced a designated area for fasting students during Ramadan to create a more comfortable environment for them.
In Helsinki's Itäkeskus, a new arrangement for Ramadan fasting has been implemented at a local school where students can spend their lunch hour in a special area called 'fasting park'. This initiative aims to provide a comfortable atmosphere for students observing Ramadan, as they traditionally refrain from eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset. Notably, around 100 of the 160 upper secondary school students are Muslims, most of whom participate in the fasting during this holy month.
Students Bechir Mezzi and Altin Gubetini expressed their satisfaction with the fasting park, indicating it allows them to read, chat, and engage in other activities like playing table football, away from the distractions and temptations of the lunchroom. The school's principal, Jutta-Riina Karhunen, noted that previously, fasting students were required to spend their lunch period in the school cafeteria, which was not comfortable for them due to the presence of food, drinks, and associated smells.
This thoughtful initiative not only creates a supportive environment for Muslim students during Ramadan but also highlights the growing recognition of religious practices within the educational framework in Finland. As parents notify the school in advance about their children's fasting, it allows the lunchroom to adjust to accommodate fewer students during meal times, showcasing a cooperative approach between the school and families to support cultural diversity and inclusion within the educational setting.
