Sudan: Nearly six million refugees dependent on aid
According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, about 5.9 million refugees from Sudan will need assistance this year as they seek food, shelter, and safety in neighboring countries.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR has reported that approximately 5.9 million refugees from Sudan are reliant on humanitarian aid this year, as stated by Mamadou Dian Balde, the UNHCR's regional director for eastern Africa, during a briefing in Geneva. These individuals are fleeing violence in Sudan and seeking food, shelter, and protection across seven neighboring countries. To adequately assist these refugees, the UN and its 123 partner organizations are requesting $1.6 billion to sustain support through the year, highlighting the ongoing and escalating nature of this humanitarian crisis.
The situation in Sudan remains dire, characterized by ongoing conflict, mainly stemming from a power struggle that erupted in April 2023 between the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. Thousands continue to flee, exacerbating the world's largest displacement crisis currently. The humanitarian situation in Sudan is reported to be the worst internationally, evidencing the severe implications of the conflict on the civilian population. As tensions rise, armed factions are reportedly receiving supplies from external sources, complicating the prospects for peace and stability in the region.
The UN has also accused both warring parties of committing war crimes, further intensifying the need for urgent international intervention and support. With more people fleeing on a weekly basis, the request for funding to aid the increasing refugee population underscores the necessity for increased global awareness and action regarding Sudanβs humanitarian crisis, which poses significant challenges for neighboring countries struggling to accommodate the influx of refugees and provide them with essential services.
