VIDEO: Cloud with 'soap bubble' colors draws attention in the sky of RS
A rare phenomenon produced an iridescent cloud in Rio Grande do Sul, captivating observers for about 30 minutes.
On Monday, a stunning phenomenon occurred in the sky over Santa Maria in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where observers noted an iridescent cloud described as resembling 'soap bubble' colors. This remarkable sight lasted for approximately 30 minutes and was captured by the cameras of the Bate-Papo Astronômico Observatory. The visual display drew attention from locals and sparked interest in the scientific explanation behind it.
Fabricio Colvero, one of the managers at the observatory, explained that this optical effect happens when sunlight passes through exceptionally small water droplets or ice crystals within the cloud. The light undergoes diffraction and interference, which leads to the separation of colors in a mesmerizing manner. Unlike a rainbow, which is formed through the refraction of light in larger raindrops, iridescence appears as soft, colorful patches typically nearby the sun and can vary in form and intensity, adding to its unique nature.
This event not only provided a beautiful visual experience for those who witnessed it, but it also serves as an opportunity for educational engagement about meteorological phenomena. As more people become aware of these rare optical effects, there is potential for increased curiosity and interest in atmospheric science, encouraging further exploration of the natural world.
