Blue and red jets above the clouds... Scientists were amazed to see this extraordinary view

Astronauts on the International Space Station observed rare luminous events above clouds, showcasing colorful jets and lightning phenomena.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) experienced a remarkable sight of luminous electrical phenomena occurring nearly 90 kilometers above Earth. While we on the ground typically observe thunderstorm sounds and flashes of lightning, these occurrences showcase colorful jets forming in the thin atmosphere above the clouds. These transient luminous events (TLEs) include blue jets, red sprites, purple halos, and ultraviolet rings, which are incredibly rapid and rarely witnessed firsthand.

To capture these events, the European Space Agency has deployed a specialized machine on the ISS known as ASIM (Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor). The ASIM continuously monitors Earth and meticulously records these small electrical phenomena occurring above the clouds. Equipped with a high-speed camera and photometer, it can detect extremely faint flashes, even those the size of a fingernail, surprising scientists with its impressive capabilities.

The data collected by ASIM has led to new insights regarding the interactions between lightning in storm clouds and the ionosphere, the upper layer of Earth's atmosphere. By unveiling the mechanisms behind these vibrant atmospheric events, researchers hope to enhance our understanding of atmospheric electricity and its broader implications on weather systems and climate science.
