A foreign couple was violently assaulted during a robbery near Avenida Chile in downtown Rio de Janeiro as they left a carnival block last Sunday. The incident was caught on video, showing one of the attackers tripping a victim to the ground, where they were initially left vulnerable until bystanders came to their aid. This shocking act of violence raises concerns about safety during Brazil's bustling carnival season, known for its festive atmosphere but sometimes shadowed by crime.
In response to the incident, the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro stated that patrol units from the 5th Battalion had been dispatched following reports of theft in the area. Upon their arrival, they made contact with one of the victims, who provided details that led to the apprehension of three suspects shortly afterward. Among the items recovered were a cellphone, a charger, a wristwatch, and five euros, all identified as belonging to the tourists, highlighting the swift police action in dealing with the crime.
The case has been officially registered at the Special Tourism Support Police Station (Deat), which is tasked with investigating crimes against tourists in the area. According to the police statistic released, there were a total of 358 arrests and the apprehension of 53 minors during the carnival festivities, indicating a concerted effort by law enforcement to address crime amidst the heightened activity during one of Brazil's most celebrated times of the year.
