Collections of the Sports Museum. Aare Tamme's Run at the Albertville Olympics
The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum highlights its collection related to Estonia’s winter sports Olympic history, focusing on Aare Tamme's impressive run during the 1992 Albertville Olympics.
In celebration of the upcoming Milano and Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum is revisiting its collection to showcase Estonia's winter sports history in the 20th century. Museum curator Kaarel Antons has selected ten items that capture the essence of Estonia's participation in the Olympics during this era. From February 9 to 20, the museum plans to feature a diverse selection of these items in collaboration with Vikerraadio's Olympic minutes, thus enriching the public's understanding of Estonia's Olympic past.
Not all winter sports have been included in the Olympic program from the beginning; instead, some were added gradually over the years. Additionally, there are sports that were included in previous Olympics yet have seen their presence reduced or eliminated from future events. An example of this is the sport of 'speed skiing' which was showcased as a demonstration event at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. During this event, remarkable records were set, with speeds exceeding 229 kilometers per hour in both men's and women's categories, highlighting the extreme nature of this sport.
Despite the astonishing speeds achieved, speed skiing could not secure a permanent place in the Olympic program. The story of Aare Tamme’s participation and the legacy of such extreme sports serve as a reminder of the dynamic nature of the Olympics and how sports can rise and fall in prominence over time. This retrospective by the Sports Museum underscores the importance of preserving the history and excitement of Estonia’s participation in winter sports.
