Collections of the Sports Museum. Allar Levandi's Competition Number 13

The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum showcases ten items from its collection, highlighting Estonia's Olympic winter sports history, including Allar Levandi's notable competition numbers from the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

In anticipation of the Milano and Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum took a deep dive into its collections to celebrate Estonia's contributions to winter sports. Museum curator Kaarel Antons selected ten significant items that narrate the Olympic journey of Estonian winter sports throughout the 20th century. From February 9 to February 20, the museum plans to present a diverse range of these artifacts in a series aired on Vikerraadio as 'Olympic Minutes'.

Among the highlights of this collection is a notable competition number '13', which belonged to Estonian Nordic combined athlete Allar Levandi during the 1988 Calgary Olympics. This particular number, alongside another one marked '4', is emblematic of Levandi’s journey as he raced in various events. The competition number '4' recalls a memorable moment for viewers, as Levandi started his pursuit race following his ski jumping event, indicating his prominence in the sport during that time.

The exhibition not only commemorates Levandi's achievements but also offers insight into the rich history of winter sports in Estonia. By showcasing such pieces, the museum helps to preserve the legacy of athletes and their contributions to the Olympic movements, encouraging pride among Estonian citizens and inspiring future generations of athletes. This initiative provides a unique opportunity for the public to engage with sports history during a peak moment of international athleticism at the Winter Olympics.
