In light of the upcoming Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics, the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum has explored its archives to showcase significant artifacts from Estonia's winter sports history. Museum curator Kaarel Antons has selected ten key items that illustrate Estonia's journey in Olympic winter sports throughout the 20th century. Each morning from February 9 to 20, the museum will introduce these items through Olympic highlights on Vikerraadio, reaching a broader audience and celebrating the legacy of Estonian athletes.
Among the treasures highlighted is a souvenir from the 1936 Winter Olympics held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, featuring figure skater Vaike Padur. This event marked the fourth Winter Olympics, with Estonia making its second appearance after participating in speed skating eight years earlier. The 1936 Games were significant not only for their competitive history but also for the debut of Estonian female athletes, with representatives in the alpine combined event and pair figure skating, marking a milestone for women in Estonian sports.
