400 kg of illegal fish in luggage from China

Authorities intercepted 400 kg of illegal seafood being smuggled from China to Italy by passengers on a low-cost flight.

In a surprising twist during a routine low-cost flight from Wenzhou to Malpensa, Italian authorities discovered 400 kg of illegal seafood being smuggled by fifteen Chinese passengers. These passengers, appearing casual and unassuming after a duty-free shopping spree, were actually transporting a variety of banned marine products including rare mollusks, unprocessed fish, and other crustaceans that do not meet EU health regulations. The presence of such contraband poses significant risks to local ecosystems and public health, as these products lack traceability and health certification required by EU standards.

The alert was raised by agents from the Guardia di Finanza in Milan, in collaboration with customs officials and the Coast Guard of Genoa. The illegal cargo included items such as the 'Asian Ark' mollusk and various dried shrimp, which must be immediately destroyed to eliminate any threat to the agricultural and food systems in Italy. It highlights the ongoing challenges faced by European nations in tackling illegal wildlife and seafood trafficking, emphasizing the need for stringent regulations at international borders to prevent the entry of unverified and harmful products.

This incident serves as a wake-up call to reinforce customs checks and regulatory measures within the EU to combat smuggling effectively. It underscores the importance of international cooperation among customs, health authorities, and enforcement agencies to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with stringent EU food standards. The focus must now remain on educating potential smugglers and enforcing consequences for those who attempt to circumvent these critical regulations, thereby protecting both the environment and public safety.
