Driver arrested transporting over 300 kg of illegal fish in Cuiabá
A 47-year-old driver was arrested in Cuiabá for transporting 340 kg of illegal fish without proper documentation.
A 47-year-old driver was arrested by the Military Police in the Santa Rosa neighborhood of Cuiabá while transporting 340 kg of illegal fish on Friday, July 20. During a routine checkpoint, police discovered several plastic bags filled with frozen fish in the back seat and trunk of the vehicle. Upon questioning, the driver admitted he did not have a professional fisherman registration or the necessary documentation, such as the Fish Transit Guide (GTP), to prove the legality of his cargo.
Concerned about the potential environmental crime, authorities called in the Environmental Battalion team, who recorded the weight and identified the fish species involved. The forensic examination revealed the presence of pintado, cachara, jaú, and pacu, all preserved in frozen conditions. The suspect claimed that the fish had been sourced from the Cuiabá River near Acorizal, which raises further questions about illegal fishing practices in the region and the conservation of local aquatic ecosystems.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal fishing activities and the enforcement of environmental laws in Brazil. The significant amount of illegal fish being transported not only suggests a breach of fishing regulations but also poses serious risks to fish populations and biodiversity in the affected waterways. Enhanced enforcement and awareness of fishing regulations are crucial to mitigate these illegal activities and protect the environment.
