Frost Returned to Lithuania Overnight: Where Was It Coldest?
Lithuania experienced severe frosts overnight, with temperatures dropping significantly in various regions, particularly in Joniškis where it reached 31.5 degrees Celsius below zero.
Overnight, Lithuania faced a severe drop in temperatures due to clear skies in many areas, with notable variations across regions. In the southwestern part of the country, temperatures ranged between 13 to 18 degrees below zero, while moving north and east revealed even harsher conditions, where temperatures fell between 20 and 25 degrees, and in some places even reached as low as 28 degrees below zero. Paulius Starkus, a meteorologist from the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, reported that Joniškis recorded the coldest temperatures at a chilling 31.5 degrees below zero.
Even by early morning, when children were preparing for school, the temperature in Joniškis remained near 30 degrees below zero. The weather in Lithuania today will be influenced by a slowly retreating anticyclone, leading to mostly sunny conditions in the morning. However, as the day progresses, clouds will begin to accumulate, especially in the southwestern regions, resulting in a predominantly cloudy sky by evening across much of the country. Despite the increased cloud coverage, significant snowfall is not expected, although light flurries could occur later in the evening in the southwestern areas.
The extreme frost conditions in Lithuania highlight the country's ability to experience significant temperature fluctuations due to geographical factors and weather patterns. The current cold snap serves as a reminder of the harsh winter conditions that can impact daily life, especially for children and those commuting in these frigid temperatures. Residents may need to prepare for cold-related challenges during this period, emphasizing the importance of staying informed about weather updates.
