Heavy rain leaves more than 70,000 homes without electricity in the capital and Greater São Paulo

Severe rain caused widespread power outages affecting over 70,000 homes in São Paulo and its metropolitan area.

On Monday, October 16, a severe rainstorm hit the city of São Paulo and its metropolitan region, prompting the city to issue a flood alert. The Centro de Gerenciamento de Emergências Climáticas (CGE) reported that the state of alert was issued at 4:30 PM local time, and the Civil Defense followed with a severe weather warning shortly thereafter. By the evening, the power company Enel reported that nearly 91,000 properties were without electricity, with the number dropping slightly to 76,895 by 7:24 PM. The most affected areas included the city of São Paulo itself and various districts in Greater São Paulo, particularly areas such as Mooca, Vila Mariana, and M'Boi Mirim. The CGE indicated that a combination of heat and maritime breezes led to the instability that caused the heavy rainfall. In Guarulhos, part of Greater São Paulo, flooding trapped individuals on the Monteiro Lobato avenue. Dramatic video footage aired by TV Globo depicted a woman stranded in a car surrounded by water, underscoring the impact of the storm on local infrastructure and public safety. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as heavy rain is expected to persist, raising concerns about further flooding and infrastructure challenges in the metropolitan area.
