Heavy rain and strong winds cause flooding, fallen trees, and power outages in SP and ABC
Heavy rain and strong winds in São Paulo caused flooding, tree falls, and power outages in various areas.
On the afternoon of Saturday, the 7th, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds led to significant flooding and tree falls in Greater São Paulo. The São Paulo Emergency Management Center declared a state of attention for flooding in the city, with various regions affected, including the East, North, West, South, Southeast, and the Central areas. The alerts were issued after the rain started, and emergency teams were dispatched across different zones to manage the flooding situations.
Between 2 PM and 5:20 PM, the São Paulo Fire Department Operation Center registered eight calls for flooding incidents, particularly in São Bernardo do Campo and the Jaçanã neighborhood in the city’s North Zone. Additionally, firefighters responded to 15 calls reporting fallen trees, with the majority of these incidents occurring in the city’s West Zone and the ABC region. Fortunately, there were no reports of building collapses, indicating that while the storm caused considerable disruption, it did not lead to catastrophic structural failures.
The volume of rain was notably intense, with reports indicating that 90 millimeters fell in São Bernardo do Campo within a single hour. This rapid accumulation of rainfall is significant and raises concerns about potential urban flooding and the capacity of drainage systems in the region. The ongoing weather conditions emphasize the need for preparedness in managing extreme weather events, especially in densely populated urban areas like São Paulo, where infrastructure may struggle to cope with such sudden downpours.
