The coalition has agreed to increase the housing benefit calculation coefficient

The Latvian coalition government has decided to increase the coefficient for calculating housing benefits by 0.4, as announced by Prime Minister Evika Siliņa.

The Latvian coalition has reached an agreement to raise the housing benefit calculation coefficient by 0.4, aimed at supporting households during the upcoming months. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa highlighted that the current law calculates this benefit based on the difference between the guaranteed minimum income threshold for households and their housing-related expenses, considering various family configurations.

Under this new plan, specific coefficients will apply depending on the household composition: a coefficient of 2.1 for individuals of retirement age or those with disabilities living alone, a coefficient of 1.7 for households composed solely of retired or disabled persons and children, and a coefficient of 1.3 for all other households. This initiative is particularly significant for low-income families who rely on such support to meet their housing costs.

The implementation of increased support is set for the period from January to April, with an additional measure in place to reimburse municipalities for 50% of the increased expenditure arising from this adjustment. This move underscores the government's commitment to easing financial burdens on residents amidst rising living costs, reflecting a proactive approach to social welfare in Latvia.
