Heating bills support temporarily raised for housing benefits and its recipients expanded
Due to rising heating costs in Latvia during a cold winter, the government has decided to temporarily increase housing benefits for lower-income households until April 30th.
In response to soaring heating costs faced by many households due to a harsh winter, the Saeima of Latvia has opted to temporarily increase the housing benefits for lower-income families. This adjustment aims to alleviate the financial burden on those most affected by the cold. The new benefits will be in effect until April 30, with an expected increase in recipients by approximately 7,500 individuals and a monthly benefit hike of around €46.
This measure was discussed and agreed upon by the ruling parties on February 16, as social workers are also set to receive additional payments for increased workloads due to the change in demand. The Ministry of Welfare indicated that the low temperatures recorded in January and February led to significant increases in heating and other housing-related expenses, which have heavily impacted low-income households.
As part of the government's strategy, municipalities will receive partial compensation for the raised benefits, ensuring that the financial weight is not solely on the local governments. This proactive step highlights the urgency to support vulnerable populations through challenging economic conditions and the focus on social welfare initiatives during extreme weather events.
