'Digital Loot' in the Name of Board Exams! Fake Papers Being Sold on Telegram for 1,000

A network of cyber fraudsters has resurfaced, selling fake board exam papers on Telegram for between 500 to 1,000 rupees, targeting anxious students.

As the board examinations commence, a new wave of cyber fraud has emerged in India, particularly during the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examinations for classes 10 and 12. Fraudsters are exploiting social media platforms, especially Telegram, claiming to provide 'real papers' before the exams. Hundreds of students are lured into the trap through links promising leaked question papers, only to find themselves scammed for hefty sums between 500 to 1,000 rupees.

The modus operandi of this fraudulent network is alarming. Investigations have revealed that fake Telegram channels are established where students receive links enticing them with the prospect of obtaining leaked papers. Once a student clicks on the link, they are redirected to another group where they are pressured to pay a set amount via QR scanners or payment links. Upon receiving the payment, the perpetrators either hand over a bogus question paper or vanish altogether. Screenshots of extortions are circulating on social media, indicating the widespread nature of this scam. Yet, an essential point remains: there is no actual leak of papers; it is a carefully orchestrated scheme taking advantage of students' anxiety and haste.

To combat this rising threat, cyber units are on alert, emphasizing that students must be cautious and not fall prey to these scams. The authorities are called to increase surveillance on these channels and ensure that genuine assistance is available to students preparing for their critical examinations. The issue highlights a significant intersection of technology and education, where the pressures of academics can lead students to risky decisions, showcasing the dark side of digital advancements.
