Deadline for removing accumulated waste in Fernando de Noronha is not met
The administration of Fernando de Noronha failed to meet a deadline to remove 400 tons of garbage from the island, which has raised environmental and sanitation concerns.
The administration of Fernando de Noronha mandated that 400 tons of accumulated garbage be cleared from the island within 48 hours. This directive was assigned to Ambipar, the urban cleaning company responsible for waste management in the area. However, the deadline, which expired on Friday, the 13th, was not met, and as of Monday the 16th, the amount of waste at the treatment facility remained largely unchanged, according to reports. The presence of accumulated trash poses significant risks to the operation of waste collection services and endangers the island's environmental and public health.
In response to the unmet deadline, the state environmental agency (CPRH) fined Ambipar R$ 700,000 due to the accumulation of waste and the associated environmental hazards. The situation has become critical as local officials indicate that the backlog of garbage affects not only the aesthetic aspect of the island but also the safety and health of residents and tourists alike. On several occasions, the government reiterated the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment on the island, especially given its status as a popular tourist destination.
As the situation develops, G1 has attempted to reach out to Ambipar for an explanation regarding their failure to comply with the waste removal order but has yet to receive a response. This lack of communication raises additional questions about the operational capabilities of the company and the effectiveness of waste management strategies in place on Fernando de Noronha, highlighting the need for better oversight and accountability in managing the island's waste disposal operations.
