Managers of Fernando de Noronha travel on the chartered plane of a company fined for garbage accumulation
Officials from Fernando de Noronha traveled on a jet owned by a company recently fined for improper waste management on the island.
On March 12, the superintendent of Infrastructure for Fernando de Noronha, SΓ©rgio Soares de Souza Costa, and the Island Administration's Legal Advisor, AndrΓ© Luiz Pereira de Azevedo, took a flight to Recife on a jet owned by Ambipar. The flight attracted attention as Ambipar has recently been fined R$ 700,000 due to the accumulation of garbage on the island, identified during an inspection by the State Environmental Agency (CPRH). The company is responsible for urban cleaning in Noronha, and the fine was one of the direct results of their failure to manage waste properly.
The local administration also issued a notification to Ambipar days prior to the flight, outlining concerns over the accumulation of garbage and failures in the company's service. This notice came on March 11, a day before they traveled on the company's aircraft. The involvement of local officials with a company facing such significant penalties raises questions about governance and accountability in the island's administrative practices, especially in a key tourist destination like Fernando de Noronha.
Residents and environmental activists may view these developments with concern, as they highlight ongoing issues with waste management in the region. The incident underscores the importance of compliance with environmental regulations and may prompt local authorities to reconsider their partnerships with companies that fail to meet their obligations, particularly in sensitive ecological areas like Fernando de Noronha.
