Back home in a circle: Tartu University basketball team has hired a new manager

Marek Doronin, a former top basketball player, has been appointed as the new manager of Tartu University basketball team starting mid-March.

The Tartu University basketball team has announced the appointment of Marek Doronin as their new manager, effective from mid-March. Doronin, a former top player who spent 18 consecutive seasons with the Tartu team, retired from professional basketball a decade ago. Post his playing career, he has been involved with the Estonian Academic Sports Union, notably serving as the Secretary General for the last two years.

In his statements during the announcement, Doronin expressed his inner desire to return to basketball after ten years working in sports administration. Initially flattered by the opportunity suggested by club director Gert Prants to apply for the position left vacant by Robert Peterson, Doronin had to adjust to the idea of returning to top-level basketball after a significant hiatus. The prospect of managing a team with which he has a long affiliation has made him keen to step back into the sport.

Doronin's rich history with the Tartu basketball club, both as a player and as someone deeply integrated into the sports system in Estonia, suggests he may bring valuable experience and insight into his new managerial role. As Tartu University’s basketball team seeks to further its competitive edge, Doronin's leadership might be instrumental in shaping the team's future direction and success in Estonia's basketball landscape.
