Former professional basketball player and Estonian national team captain Mailis Pokk is appointed as the manager of the Tartu University basketball team.
Mailis Pokk, a long-time professional basketball player and captain of the Estonian national team, has taken on the role of manager for the Tartu University Maks & Moorits basketball team. After 14 years of playing professional basketball, Pokk expressed that the decision to retire from playing was made thoughtfully, as she had considered stepping into management for some time. She initially applied for the team manager position several months ago and had a plan to continue playing if she was not selected for the role.
At 33 years old, Pokk is enthusiastic about continuing her career in a field she knows intimately. She mentioned in a club press release that her experience as a professional player positions her well to understand what is expected from a manager. Additionally, she has undergone various FIBA training programs thanks to the Estonian Basketball Association, which has prepared her for entering the workforce in this new capacity.
Pokk's transition into management represents a significant move within the Estonian basketball landscape, emphasizing the ongoing connection between former players and team management roles. Her background not only provides her with a deep understanding of the sport but also the empathetic perspective required to support and guide current players. This change could potentially influence the dynamics of the Tartu University team as they aim for success in upcoming competitions.
