App driver arrested with about 30 kilos of marijuana in the trunk of a car in Januária

A 26-year-old app driver was arrested in Januária, Brazil, with approximately 30 kilos of marijuana in his car trunk after being stopped by police for suspicious behavior.

In a recent incident in Januária, located in Northern Minas Gerais, police seized around 30 kilograms of marijuana from the trunk of a vehicle. The arrest occurred on Sunday when a patrol from the Tactical Mobile Team noticed a car moving suspiciously at low speed in the Cerâmica neighborhood. After initiating a stop with lights and sirens, the driver attempted to escape for about 300 meters before being apprehended by officers who detected a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

Upon searching the car, police discovered 29 pressed bars of marijuana along with an additional piece of the drug. The suspect, a 26-year-old man, claimed that he was working as an app driver and had been hired for R$ 1,500 to transport the drugs from Montes Claros to Januária. This detail raises questions about the involvement of ride-sharing services in illicit drug trafficking and the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring such activities.

The case underscores the ongoing issues of drug trafficking in Brazil, particularly in regions like Northern Minas Gerais, where criminal activity can frequently intersect with everyday occupations. The arrest not only highlights the immediate efforts of the police department to tackle drug crimes but also indicates a broader concern regarding the safety and regulation of app-based transportation services amid rising drug-related incidents.
