After the protests, the GDDKiA headquarters takes control of the S7 Kraków-Myślenice project

The GDDKiA has taken over the design of the S7 expressway project in Poland after previous proposals failed to gain public support.

On February 16, during a press conference in Kraków, Polish Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak announced that the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) will now oversee the design of the S7 expressway from Kraków to Myślenice. This decision follows a series of protests against the six existing project proposals, none of which received public backing. Consequently, these previous plans will not continue to the next stage of the approval process.

Klimczak emphasized a new collaborative approach to the project, inviting social groups, local government representatives, and academic experts to participate in the redesign. The GDDKiA's head, Paweł Woźniak, is expected to form a team dedicated to developing fresh design options for the expressway. This decision marks a significant shift in the handling of infrastructure projects in the region, showcasing the ministry's responsiveness to public concerns and the importance of community involvement in such undertakings.

The shift in oversight reflects ongoing tensions between government authorities and local communities regarding infrastructure developments. By involving a broader range of stakeholders in the planning process, the GDDKiA aims to enhance public trust and ensure that the project aligns with community needs and environmental standards. The outcome of this project may serve as a precedent for future infrastructure projects across Poland, influencing how similar initiatives are managed and perceived by the public.
