Mastrafjord Tunnel may be closed until Monday evening
The Mastrafjord Tunnel in Norway may remain closed until 7 PM Monday due to the aftermath of a truck fire.
The Mastrafjord Tunnel is expected to remain closed until Monday evening, with officials stating it could potentially open earlier. Traffic operator Jan Marøy indicated that significant dismantling work is needed for the truck involved in the fire, which has been completely destroyed. Additionally, inspections will be conducted to assess any damage to the tunnel's ceiling.
The closure comes after a truck caught fire early Monday morning, prompting the authorities to redirect ferry traffic from Mortavika-Arsvågen to Mekjarvik-Arsvågen for three out of four ferries operating in the Boknafjord connection. This has complicated travel for residents on Rennesøy, who now face the necessity of taking two ferries for southbound travel or when returning from the south.
For residents of Mosterøy, Sokn, and Åmøy, as well as those traveling to these areas, there are manual traffic directions through the Byfjord Tunnel. The incident underscores the disruption caused by such accidents, impacting local transportation routes and prompting safety assessments as cleanup and repairs are carried out.
