Smoke development in truck in the Oslofjord Tunnel - a lane open again

The Oslofjord Tunnel has reopened towards Drøbak after being closed due to smoke development from a truck, which was later clarified to be just steam.

The Oslofjord Tunnel, a crucial transport artery in Norway, faced temporary closure due to smoke emanating from a truck located within the tunnel. Authorities from the Vegtrafikksentralen Øst confirmed that while there was a significant presence of smoke, it was determined not to be a fire, but rather water vapor. This incident led to the immediate closure of the tunnel in both directions just before 5 PM on Wednesday, causing significant delays for traffic in the area.

As efforts to manage the situation progressed, traffic operators reported that the truck was positioned approximately 300 meters from the tunnel's exit on the Drammen side. The police later clarified that only water vapor was responsible for the smoke, which dissipated relatively quickly. Nonetheless, recovery operations involving heavy towing equipment were ordered, meaning that full access to the tunnel would be delayed for a while until the area was deemed safe and clear for traffic again.

This incident highlights the importance of quick and efficient responses to potentially hazardous situations in critical infrastructure like the Oslofjord Tunnel. Given its significance for local and regional transportation, the rapid reopening of the tunnel demonstrates the effectiveness of emergency protocols in minimizing disruption. However, the event raises concerns about the preparedness for similar scenarios in the future, and the need for regular updates to safety protocols to ensure public safety in such transport scenarios.
