Porto Rafti Port: Pilot Placement of Moorings for the Protection of Posidonia Meadows

A pilot program in Greece aims to protect Posidonia sea meadows by establishing moorings at Porto Rafti to limit damage from anchoring vessels.

The "Posidonia Oceanica: Do Not Disturb" initiative, a groundbreaking pilot project for marine protection, is being actively supported by TP Greece in collaboration with Aegean Rebreath. This program, which marks the first of its kind in Greece, made significant progress during an event held on February 11 at the Mesogaia port in Porto Rafti, focusing on the preservation of Posidonia meadows, which are vital to marine ecosystems.

As part of the project, the Aegean Rebreath team implemented the placement of designated moorings following studies conducted by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ELKETHE) the previous year. This strategic action aims to mitigate the reckless damage caused by vessels anchoring in these sensitive areas, thereby protecting the local marine flora from further degradation. The establishment of these moorings represents a crucial shift from theoretical studies to practical applications aimed at fostering a more sustainable approach to marine resource usage.

Both TP Greece and Aegean Rebreath have reaffirmed their commitment to marine conservation, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures in sustainability practices. This initiative not only highlights the need for environmental protection but also serves as a model for future conservation efforts in Greece and potentially across the Mediterranean, underscoring the role of local partnerships in safeguarding natural resources.
