Four people escaped from a car that sank into the ice - new information from the police

Police are investigating an incident in which a car sank into ice in Hangö, Finland, and whether the driver may have caused a dangerous situation.

The police are currently investigating a troubling incident in Hangö, Finland, where a car plunged into the ice. Authorities are assessing whether the case, which occurred on a Saturday, meets the legal criteria for endangering the safety of others. The ongoing investigation will determine if the driver was negligent or acted with intent, potentially putting the lives of those in the vehicle at risk. At this stage, police do not have reasons to suspect intentional wrongdoing or intoxication. The incident took place near the eastern harbor of Hangö, where the vehicle, a van, broke through the ice after driving several kilometers on it. Shortly before noon, the ice gave way, causing the vehicle to begin sinking into the water. Fortunately, three of the four passengers were able to escape immediately, while the fourth managed to get out shortly afterwards. However, a dog that was also in the vehicle did not escape and remained trapped inside the sinking car. The Finnish Coast Guard previously mentioned to Ilta-Sanomat that they are involved as the situation escalated, given the risks associated with icy conditions. The authorities are now focused on ensuring the safety of the remaining passengers and understanding the events that led to this dangerous situation, as well as preventative measures for similar incidents in the future.
