Panic hit when the car sank into the ice – the doors wouldn't open either
A car sank into the sea in Luoto, Finland, after the ice beneath it broke, leading to a panic situation for the driver and passenger.
In mid-February, a car drove into the sea in Luoto, Finland, when the ice compromised beneath it. The 19-year-old driver and his friend faced a terrifying situation as they discovered the doors of the car would not open. Fortunately, they managed to escape through the side windows, with the driver having to swim approximately 6–8 meters in icy water to safety. After escaping, he returned to the vehicle to turn off the engine.
The incident raised alarms about the dangers of driving on ice in unfamiliar areas. Jan-Ole Haglund, the father of the young driver, warned against venturing onto ice-covered bodies of water that are not well-known or properly checked for safety. He emphasized the need for caution, especially when conditions may deceive individuals into feeling secure about their safety on thin ice.
This event highlights the importance of being cautious and well-informed when it comes to winter activities in Finland, particularly regarding ice safety. As a result of the incident, the insurance company refused to cover damages since the area was not designated as a public ice road, further underlining the consequences of venturing into unsafe situations without proper knowledge.
