On Sunday, Finnish mixed martial artist Juho Suvanto achieved a remarkable victory by winning gold at the European Championships held in Serbia. At just 21 years old, Suvanto showcased his impressive skills in the 83.9 kg category, advancing to the finals with seamless performances, including technical knockouts in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals. His semi-final match against Croatian fighter Jan Gojsalicin ended in a judges' decision favoring Suvanto, leading him to the gold medal match.
In the final bout, Suvanto faced Ireland's Eric Markun and secured victory by unanimous decision, cementing his status as a top competitor in European mixed martial arts. This victory adds to Suvanto's recent accolades, including winning the Nordic Championship in January and a national boxing championship in December. The competition in Belgrade proved to be a successful outing for Finnish athletes overall, as they collectively earned four medals in various weight categories.
Another highlight of the tournament included Nina Hietamäki's silver medal performance in the women's 61.2 kg category, where she narrowly lost to England's Katrina Fisher by judges' decision in the final. Additionally, fellow Finnish fighters Joni Vesa and Kerttu Saarnisaari brought home bronze medals in their respective divisions, illustrating a strong showing for Finland in this international event.
