The Collections of the Sports Museum. Haljandi's Fully Scribbled Competition Number
The Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum highlights items from its collection related to Estonia's Olympic story in winter sports, including Tõnu Haljandi's autograph competition number from the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics.
In light of the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum is revisiting its collection to showcase the story of Estonian winter sports. The museum's chief curator, Kaarel Antons, has selected ten significant items that capture Estonia's Olympic history in winter sports during the 20th century. Each day from February 9 to February 20, the museum will present a diverse selection of these items through Olympic segments on Vikerraadio, celebrating the contributions of Estonian athletes.
Among the notable items is Tõnu Haljandi's competition number from the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics, where he represented Estonia in Nordic combined. Haljandi was instrumental in continuing the tradition of Estonian athletes at the Winter Olympics, particularly in the Nordic combined event, which at that time featured only one discipline—the men's individual event. He achieved a commendable 12th place out of 41 competitors, marking a significant accomplishment for Estonian winter sports.
This particular competition number, labeled as number one according to the start order, is made of cotton fabric and bears Haljandi's autographs, symbolizing his participation and legacy in Olympic history. The preservation of such artifacts not only honors individual athletes but also encapsulates a wider narrative of Estonian athletic spirit and dedication in international competitions, contributing to the country's sports heritage.
