Calgary ski jumper Abigail Strate achieved an 11th place finish in the women’s large hill competition during the Milan Cortina Olympics. In her performance, the 24-year-old athlete scored 106.9 points on her first jump and improved to 136.7 on her final attempt, culminating in a total score of 243.6 points. This event marked the Olympic debut of women’s ski jumping, with Norway emerging as the top nation, capturing both gold and silver medals through athletes Anna Odine Strøm and Eirin Maria Kvandal. Slovenia's Nika Prevc rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.
Strate's performance comes on the heels of her recent accolades, as she was part of the Canadian team that won the country's first Olympic ski jumping medal in a mixed event at the 2022 Beijing Games. Additionally, she has had a successful season in the World Cup circuit, winning five medals in the large hill category, including a gold in Germany on January 1. Earlier in the ongoing Games, Strate also secured an 11th place in the women’s normal hill competition, where Strøm again took home the gold. Strate's continued presence at these international events highlights the growing prominence of Canadian athletes in ski jumping.
