Settlers Subjected to International Sanctions: Who Are They and What Are Their Crimes?

Israeli settlers have faced international sanctions due to their violent actions against Palestinians, particularly in the West Bank, amid escalating tensions.

Amid the unfolding genocide in the Gaza Strip, Israeli settlers have significantly increased their violent acts and attacks in the West Bank, leading to numerous fatalities and widespread destruction of Palestinian properties. These actions have resulted in the loss of countless trees and the forced displacement of entire communities. Much of this violence is orchestrated by local settler leaders, some of whom are currently under European sanctions while others had previously faced sanctions from the Trump administration, although those were lifted.

Since the beginning of 2024, several countries including the United States, Canada, the UK, and various EU nations have imposed a series of international sanctions on settlers, associated companies, and organizations in response to the violent actions and terrorist attacks perpetrated by settlers against Palestinians and their properties in the occupied West Bank. This collective international response underscores the severity of the situation on the ground and the need for accountability against these acts of aggression.

On June 10, 2025, five countries—namely the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway—announced sanctions against Israeli officials such as National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, due to their involvement in inciting violence against Palestinians and providing support for these actions. The sanctions included freezing their financial assets, highlighting the international community's increased scrutiny over the ongoing violence and its perpetrators.
