Settlers Subject to International Sanctions: Who Are They and What Are Their Crimes?
Israeli settlers have increased their violence and aggression in the West Bank amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, leading to international sanctions against certain individuals and organizations.
Since the onset of the conflict in Gaza, Israeli settlers have significantly intensified their violent actions in the West Bank, resulting in numerous deaths, destruction of property, and the displacement of entire communities. These actions are predominantly orchestrated by local settler leaders, some of whom have already faced European sanctions that are still in effect, while others had sanctions lifted by the Trump administration in the U.S.
In 2024, multiple countries including the United States, Canada, the UK, and several EU nations have imposed a series of international sanctions on settlers, companies, and settler organizations in response to the violent actions and terrorist attacks against Palestinians and their properties in the occupied West Bank. These sanctions were part of a broader effort to hold accountable those involved in perpetrating violence against Palestinians.
On June 10, 2025, five countries β the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway β announced sanctions against Israeli officials such as Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir and Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich, citing their direct involvement in inciting aggression against Palestinians and supporting such actions. The sanctions included freezing their financial assets, marking a significant step in the international response to settler violence.
