25 illegal migrants not recorded at the border with Belarus
Lithuania reported no illegal migrants attempting to cross its border with Belarus over the weekend, continuing a trend of controlled border management amid an ongoing migration crisis.
Lithuania has reported that no illegal migrants were recorded attempting to cross its border with Belarus over the weekend, following similar reports from border guards in Latvia and Poland. This statistic reflects the stringent border security measures that have been implemented since the surge in migration attempts began in 2021, attributed to actions by the Belarusian regime. As of this year, only 14 illegal migrants have been denied entry into Lithuania, highlighting the effectiveness of these border controls.
The ongoing migration crisis that began in 2021 has seen a significant number of attempts to illegally enter Lithuania and other Eastern European Union member states from Belarus. Last year, there were over 1,600 attempts to illegally cross the border, and the number was even higher in the year prior, reaching around 1,002. This situation has heightened tensions between the EU and Belarus, with Western nations accusing the Belarusian government of orchestrating these migration flows as a form of hybrid warfare against the EU.
Since the onset of the migration crisis, Lithuanian border guards have prevented over 24,600 illegal migrants from entering the country. The situation at the Lithuanian border remains a focal point in discussions about EU border security and the political dynamics between member states and Belarus, with implications for how migration policies are shaped in response to security challenges.
