Textbooks and the New Mexican School 'will not change': Sheinbaum, after Marx Arriaga's departure

Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that educational materials and the New Mexican School will remain unchanged following the departure of Marx Arriaga.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that the country's educational materials and the New Mexican School (NEM) will remain unchanged despite the recent departure of Marx Arriaga, who held the position of General Director of Educational Materials at the Ministry of Public Education (SEP). Sheinbaum emphasized the continuity of the NEM and highlighted its impact on the educational reform, particularly mentioning the incorporation of women's history into textbooks.

During an event to expand national high school education in San Pablo del Monte, Tlaxcala, Sheinbaum expressed confidence in the current educational model, arguing that it has brought vital changes to the way young people are educated, particularly through revised content in primary and secondary education. By incorporating diverse perspectives such as women's contributions to history, Sheinbaum stated that the textbooks will be enriched, while maintaining the core principles of the NEM intact.

This announcement comes amid ongoing debates about educational reform in Mexico, where the NEM has been a focal point of political and social discussion. The commitment to keep the curriculum stable, even with leadership changes in the education sector, may be seen as a strategy to consolidate support for the current administration's educational policies, especially as they strive to navigate criticism and opposition to the reforms they have implemented.
