K. Budrys: Lithuania plans to join the Southeast Asia cooperation agreement this year
Lithuanian Foreign Minister K. Budrys has expressed Lithuania's intent to join the Southeast Asia cooperation agreement during a meeting with the Philippines' Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro at the Munich Security Conference.
At the Munich Security Conference, Lithuanian Foreign Minister K. Budrys met with Philippines Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro to discuss bilateral cooperation in various sectors including economics, high technology, security and defense, as well as cultural exchanges. Both officials expressed a strong appreciation for the Philippines' position on upholding a rules-based international order, indicating their shared commitment to these principles.
During their discussions, Budrys emphasized Lithuania's clear interest in enhancing relations with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which the Philippines is currently the chair. He mentioned the many opportunities available to deepen collaboration at both the European Union and national levels, particularly during the current Philippine chairmanship, showcasing Lithuania's strategic approach to engaging with Southeast Asian nations.
Budrys pointed out that diplomatic relations between Lithuania and the Philippines were established in 1991, highlighting the growing partnership over the years. With Lithuania's decision to apply for membership in the ASEAN cooperation agreement, there are potential implications for strengthening diplomatic ties and enhancing economic cooperation between Lithuania and Southeast Asia, facilitating a broader European engagement in the region.
