TV Republika without a license? Sakiewicz in a fierce clash with KRRiT
A dispute over TV Republika's licensing fees continues as the station's owner, Tomasz Sakiewicz, seeks to change payment terms amidst financial uncertainties.
TV Republika, led by Tomasz Sakiewicz, is embroiled in a long-standing dispute with the Polish National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) regarding the payment terms of its broadcasting license. The council mandates that the entire license fee be paid annually, whereas Sakiewicz wants more flexible arrangements, allowing the station to determine the amount and schedule of payments. This disagreement could affect the station's operational legitimacy and financial stability.
As of September 1, 2025, TV Republika was expected to pay its annual license fee totaling 1.79 million PLN plus accrued interest of 129 thousand PLN. By December of the previous year, KRRiT noted that the station had missed its payment deadline and ordered the full amount to be settled by January 15, 2026. Although Sakiewicz claims that the channel has paid its license fee for terrestrial broadcasting by the end of March, a significant portion of the fee remains unpaid, raising concerns about the channel's future on the air.
TV Republika's financial troubles are not new, as pointed out by "Gazeta Wyborcza," which highlighted that the station was in a precarious financial position even while applying for a new broadcasting license. The ongoing negotiations over payment terms reflect broader issues within Poland's media landscape, particularly how financing and regulation impact the sustainability of media outlets, especially those with controversial editorial lines like TV Republika, which has a conservative leaning.
