TV Republika is negotiating its license. Sakiewicz issued a statement

TV Republika is struggling to pay its annual broadcasting fee and is in negotiations with the National Broadcasting Council for payment arrangements.

TV Republika, a Polish television station, has declared a financial inability to pay its annual broadcasting license fee of 1.79 million PLN, which was due on September 1, 2025. Despite being obligated by the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) to make this payment, the station has failed to complete the transfer and has only made a partial payment. In a recent meeting, TV Republika proposed to pay 700,000 PLN by June instead of the full 900,000 PLN required and requested to be allowed to pay in monthly installments, reflecting the station's ongoing financial struggles.

The KRRiT engaged in discussions regarding this payment issue last week, but neither the request for installment payments nor the motion to reject this arrangement garnered the necessary majority of four votes. This impasse highlights the contentious atmosphere surrounding media financing in Poland, particularly concerning television stations tied to political affiliations. Notably, Maciej Åšwirski's suspension, pending a trial regarding allegations of harming public media interests, adds complexity to the situation as he is a significant player in the broadcasting arena, contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the future of TV Republika's operations.

In this context, the KRRiT is composed of members including the newly appointed chair Agnieszka Glapiak, Marzena Paczuska, Dr. Hanna Karp, and Professor Tadeusz Kowalski. Among these, only Professor Kowalski is unassociated with the previous government, suggesting potential influences on the council's decisions concerning which financial arrangements may or may not be accepted. The ongoing negotiations between TV Republika and the KRRiT thus serve as a microcosm of the broader challenges facing media outlets in Poland amidst evolving political landscapes.
