Clean Thursday: Seizure of 4.8 tons of unsuitable meat from a warehouse in Kapanthriti

Authorities in the Attica region seized 4.8 tons of unsuitable meat during inspections conducted on Clean Thursday due to safety and quality concerns for consumers.

On Clean Thursday, February 12, officials from the Attica region seized 4,780 kilograms of unsuitable meat during extensive inspections carried out across various cold storage facilities, retail stores, and meat trading businesses throughout the region. The inspections were aimed at ensuring the quality and safety of products that reach consumers, as well as preventing price gouging during a time of increased demand for meat, a traditional item for the holiday celebrations.

During the inspections, representatives from the Directorate of Agricultural and Veterinary Policy discovered a significant amount of meat stored in a cold storage facility in Kapanthriti, which was exceeding acceptable storage limits and deemed unsafe for market distribution. In response, the necessary procedures were activated for the safe management and destruction of the seized meat, adhering to both national and EU legislative guidelines.

This incident highlights the importance of food safety inspections, especially during periods of high demand tied to cultural celebrations. Through such proactive measures, local authorities aim to protect public health and ensure that consumers receive safe products while discouraging unethical practices among vendors during busy times.
