"Latvenergo" plans to build a reserve water bypass near the Pļaviņu hydropower plant

Latvenergo is set to construct a reserve water bypass at the Pļaviņu hydropower station to manage water levels during hydrological changes and enhance flood capacity.

Latvenergo, a leading energy supply company in Latvia, has announced plans to construct a reserve water bypass at the Pļaviņu hydropower station in Aizkraukle. This project aims to provide additional capabilities for lowering the water level in the hydropower reservoir under different hydrological conditions and to enhance the station's capacity to manage potential flooding scenarios. The announcement has sparked discussions with suppliers as part of the preliminary procurement process necessary to begin the construction planning phase.

The company has scheduled a consultation with suppliers regarding the procurement for the design and oversight of the bypass project, which is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2026. The technical documentation for this construction project is classified as restricted access. According to the proposed timeline, the design phase of the project is planned to commence in January 2027 and run until April 2030, following which construction and supervision are anticipated from January 2031 to December 2035. The warranty period for the completed works will span from December 2035 to November 2040, indicating the long-term commitment Latvenegro is making to enhance infrastructure at the hydropower station.

This initiative by Latvenergo is crucial in ensuring a reliable energy supply amidst changing climate conditions that may lead to unpredictable water levels. The construction of the reserve water bypass aligns with broader environmental management strategies aimed at mitigating the impacts of flooding and ensuring operational readiness in the face of climate variability. It represents a key step toward enhancing the resilience of Latvia's energy infrastructure for the future.
