Latvenergo: This winter has seen the highest electricity consumption in terms of capacity
This winter in Latvia has experienced the highest level of electricity consumption, primarily due to colder temperatures and higher electricity prices, according to LatEnergo CEO Mārtiņš Čakste.
Latvia's electricity consumption has reached record levels this winter, attributed to one of the coldest winters in the past 15 years. Mārtiņš Čakste, the CEO of LatEnergo, indicated that this year's price of electricity has increased by approximately 83% compared to last winter, influenced by various factors including the severe weather. He emphasized that the comparison to last winter, which was one of the warmest on record, showcases the significant increase in consumption and corresponding prices.
The challenges for electricity supply are compounded by regional factors, as the thermal power plants of LatEnergo have been operating at near full capacity for over two months to meet demand. The reliance on fossil resources, including those from neighboring Estonia and Lithuania, has played a significant role in determining the electricity prices in the region. This situation presents concerns not only for consumers witnessing rising costs but also for the energy supply stability in Latvia.
As LatEnergo continues to navigate these challenges, the focus remains on ensuring that the electricity supply can meet current demand while also addressing the economic implications of such price increases on households and businesses. This situation highlights the critical importance of energy management strategies, particularly in times of extreme weather conditions, prompting discussions around sustainable energy solutions moving forward.
