Weather: Storms in the Ionian Sea, Epirus and Macedonia – Favorable conditions for the transport of African dust

Storms are expected in the Ionian Sea, Epirus, and Macedonia, along with the transport of African dust affecting weather conditions.

The weather forecast for Greece indicates that on Saturday, local rains and sporadic storms will develop in the northern Ionian Sea, Epirus, western Sterea, and gradually in central Macedonia. The storms are expected to intensify during the evening hours in some areas. Meanwhile, the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese will experience passing clouds with possible isolated storms. The rest of the country will see few clouds that will increase in the afternoon, leading to local rain in the northern regions.

Snowfall is anticipated in the central and northern mountainous areas due to the prevailing meteorological conditions, which also promote the transport of African dust beginning in the afternoon in the western and southern regions. Winds will start from the west at speeds of 4 to 6 Beaufort, reaching up to 7 in the southern parts, and temporarily up to 8 in Crete. However, by the afternoon, southern winds will take over both the western and eastern regions, exerting 6 to 7 Beaufort gusts, particularly in the Aegean Sea and southern waters by late evening.

Temperatures are expected to remain within typical ranges, while the introduction of African dust may lead to air quality implications, thus advising residents to remain cautious, particularly those with respiratory issues. With severe weather patterns being a concern, heightened vigilance is necessary across affected areas for safety during storms and wind conditions which could result in stronger gusts throughout the day.
