Perth set to 'come alive' as inner-city university opens
Perth has welcomed its first comprehensive inner-city university, expected to enhance the vibrancy of the CBD and benefit local businesses.
Edith Cowan University (ECU) has officially opened its new inner-city campus in Perth, marking a significant milestone as the first comprehensive inner-city university in the region. Located in Yagan Square, the campus boasts an impressive investment of $853 million, funded through a collaboration between the university and state and federal governments. Covering 65,000 square meters across 11 levels, it features state-of-the-art facilities in business, law, and technology, alongside the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), which is set to host 300 performances annually across its public venues.
The relocation of ECU from Mount Lawley to the heart of Perth's Central Business District (CBD) is anticipated to inject new life into the area, which is already known for its vibrant entertainment and hospitality scene. The influx of thousands of students is expected not only to enhance the cultural landscape of the CBD but also provide a significant economic boost to local businesses that will benefit from increased foot traffic and engagement. Local officials and university representatives view this development as a catalyst for the revitalization of the city center, fostering an environment that embraces education and community engagement.
In addition to formal education opportunities, the new campus underscores the value of creative arts in urban development. By integrating the WAAPA into the university's infrastructure, there is a clear recognition of the arts' role in community revitalization and economic growth. This innovative approach to education in the city aligns with broader trends seen in urban environments globally, where higher education institutions are increasingly positioned as central players in economic and cultural revitalization efforts.
