Former rector denounced to Justice for million-dollar embezzlement at UERR claims to be the target of a 'narrative'

Regys Odlare Lima de Freitas, the former rector of the State University of Roraima, denies allegations of embezzlement and destruction of evidence, claiming the accusations are part of a false narrative against him.

Regys Odlare Lima de Freitas, who served as the rector of the State University of Roraima (UERR) since 2015, has been accused of embezzlement and destruction of evidence regarding a financial scandal within the institution. On allegations made by the Roraima Public Ministry (MP), Freitas claims these accusations are unwarranted and labels the supposed alterations in the Integrated Planning, Accounting and Finance System (Fiplan) as "technically impossible." He argues that audits covering the financial exercises from 2016 to 2022 would prevent any retroactive changes to the data.

Despite Freitas's denials, the investigation led by the Special Task Force Against Organized Crime (Gaeco) paints a different picture. Prosecutors have submitted a request for preventive detention, emphasizing that evidence tampering is actively being conducted, contrary to Freitas's assertions. They note that alterations to financial records in the system began as far back as December, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the university's financial management.

This case highlights significant issues surrounding accountability and governance in Brazilian educational institutions. As investigations unfold, the outcome may influence public trust in the UERR and raise questions regarding the oversight mechanisms in place to prevent corruption. Moreover, it reflects broader challenges faced by institutions in managing financial practices and the ongoing war against corruption within Brazil's public sectors.
