Former rector used UERR funds to pay for custom furniture for his own home
The former rector of the University of Roraima is under investigation for misusing university funds for personal expenses, including custom furniture for his residence.
The former rector of the University State of Roraima (UERR), Regys Odlare Lima de Freitas, has been accused by the Public Ministry of misappropriating university funds for his personal use. This includes payments for custom furniture installed in his home. The allegations surfaced from statements made by the current rector, ClΓ‘udio Travassos, who reported the situation to the authorities, indicating a significant misuse of institutional resources.
According to the report accessed by G1, Travassos informed prosecutors that the former rector had entered into 'verbal commitments' with suppliers, which ultimately led to a financial scam. The revelation came to light when a furnished furniture businessman sought recovery of a debt related to the furnishings in Freitas's home. Upon investigation, the current administration discovered that these debts were incurred through funds that should have been allocated for UERR operational needs.
The Public Ministry is using this incident as evidence to illustrate the blurred lines between public and private property, emphasizing a larger issue of mismanagement and potential corruption within the university's financial operations. This case not only raises concerns about individual accountability in the misuse of educational funds but also points to the need for increased oversight and reform in the management of public educational institutions in Brazil.
