Sheinbaum rules out directing Morena deputies in Nuevo León not to approve the fiscal package

Claudia Sheinbaum stated that there is no directive from the national government to prevent Morena deputies in Nuevo León from approving the 2026 fiscal package, attributing their hesitation to the significant debt proposed by the governor.

In a recent press conference, Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico City, denied allegations that the national government is instructing Morena deputies in Nuevo León not to support the 2026 fiscal package. She emphasized that the opposition to the budget is based on genuine concerns regarding the extensive debt proposed by Governor Samuel García. Sheinbaum reassured that the reasons for the deputies' dissent are substantive and not politically motivated due to the budget's origins from political opponents, such as Movimiento Ciudadano, PRI, or PAN.

Sheinbaum highlighted that many local legislators from Morena find the budget proposal unsustainable because it envisions a considerable increase in debt. This is a critical point in the fiscal discussions, as it indicates a growing rift within the party in a jurisdiction that is predominantly governed by rival political formations. The apprehension expressed by these deputies is rooted in fiscal responsibility and the long-term financial implications for Nuevo León, a state vital to Mexico's economic landscape.

The potential refusal to pass the fiscal package could imply broader consequences not only for the local economy of Nuevo León but also for the political dynamics in Mexico. If Morena deputies do not align with their party’s national stance, this could signal divisive lines within the party itself, potentially affecting its cohesion and strategy ahead of future elections, especially in a context where state budgets play a pivotal role in regional governance and development.
