Fishermen on the snow-covered lake ice bring shovels: drifts reach up to half a meter

In Kuršiu Nerija, heavy snowfall has created challenging conditions for locals, but the mayor remains optimistic about accessibility and winter activities.

A strong snowfall has blanketed the Kuršiu Nerija peninsula in Lithuania, leading to challenging weather conditions for both residents and visitors. The wind has contributed to snow drifts reaching up to half a meter in some areas, complicating navigation around the popular resort town. Mayor Darius Jasaitis demonstrated efforts to clear the snow, inviting people to check the situation for themselves, highlighting that only one road from Klaipėda to Nida is currently accessible due to ongoing municipal cleaning efforts.

Despite the harsh weather, local authorities are working to ensure that winter activities can continue. Newly established skiing trails have been buried under snow, but plans are already in place to clear and prepare them for use shortly. The mayor reassured residents that while not every hotel might be easily accessible as usual, the overall situation is manageable, and they are doing their best to maintain access amid the snowfall.

The winter season has opened a unique opportunity for activities on the ice, much to the delight of the park director, Lina Dikšaitė, who emphasized the joy of winter hikes on the frozen surface. The community has responded positively, with visitors embracing the challenge, evidenced by the arrival of a skier from Dreverna to Juodkrantė. This combination of natural beauty and community resilience highlights the spirit of Kuršiu Nerija during this snowy winter.
