Gratteri, Csm: "Do not drag us into disciplinary issues"

The members of the CSM express concern over attempts to involve them in the disciplinary debate surrounding Prosecutor Gratteri.

Members of the Italian Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM) have issued a statement expressing concern over attempts to involve them in the disciplinary discussions surrounding Prosecutor Gratteri’s recent comments. They insist that the CSM should not be used as a tool in political contests nor dragged into media announcements regarding disciplinary actions. The CSM’s role is to make decisions rather than being pulled into public disputes.

The statement, which was supported by 20 members of the CSM, emphasized that disciplinary action is initiated by the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General at the Court of Cassation. The CSM insists that it should function as a guarantee rather than as an instrument of political influence. This position highlights the delicate balance in Italian judicial independence, particularly in the face of political pressures surrounding the ongoing referendum debate.

The CSM’s comments also call for a more respectful dialogue surrounding the referendum, cautioning against personal delegitimization in discussions. They advocate for a high-level debate focusing on substantial issues rather than allowing the conversation to devolve into partisan squabbles. This stance brings to light the complexity of maintaining the judiciary's independence while addressing public concerns about potential overreach in the political arena.
