Paraíba’s Public Ministry recommends banning nighttime visits and increasing oversight on Areia Vermelha island

The Public Ministry of Paraíba has recommended the prohibition of nighttime visits to Areia Vermelha island to assess potential environmental impacts.

The Public Ministry of Paraíba (MPPB) has issued a recommendation to the Superintendence of Environmental Administration (Sudema) to prohibit nighttime visits to Areia Vermelha island in Cabedelo, near João Pessoa. This recommendation aims to take preventive measures, highlighting the need for a provisional ban until a technical assessment can be conducted regarding the environmental impacts that such visits may have. The proposal was announced by 3rd district attorney Francisco Bergson Formiga, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

The recommendations also include a ban on the use of collective sound systems, loudspeakers, and any devices for amplified sound on the island, regardless of the time. This aligns with the overarching goal of preserving the natural habitat and ensuring that the local environment is not adversely affected by human activities, especially during nighttime hours when disturbances can be heightened.

As of the latest updates, the MPPB's communication with Sudema has not yielded a response, raising questions about the enforcement of these recommendations. The initiative reflects a growing concern for environmental conservation in Brazil, particularly in sensitive ecosystems like Areia Vermelha, which is known for its biodiversity and natural beauty, making it a popular destination for visitors.
